Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) essential oil is one of the most highly used essential oils because of its many therapeutic properties. In 2012, for the first time, a placebo-controlled clinical trial confirmed that lavender essential oil is effective in relieving migraine headaches. The study was conducted by the Department of Neurology, School of Medicine, Mashad university of Medical Sciences, Mashad, Iran.
The researchers concluded that the inhalation of lavender essential oil may be a safe and effective treatment for acute migraine headache management.
Lavender essential oil has been demonstrated in other scientific studies to have analgesic (pain-killing) properties, nervine properties (calming nerves), sedative properties for mood and anxiety disorders, and spasmolytic reduction properties (relieving spasms or convulsions) in addition to being anti hypertensive (dilates blood vessels).
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) essential oil is excellent for headaches and tension in the neck muscles. Use for any muscle pain or trauma because the essential oil is analgesic (pain relieving), antispasmodic (relives muscle spasms), and is also a tonic to the system (contracts and tightens tissue).
Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) essential oil contains a significant amount of menthol. Amongst its many uses, menthol is known to help relax and ease tension headaches and muscular aches and pains. Peppermint essential oil is also analgesic (pain relieving), anti spasmodic and cooling. It is also known to reduce fevers.
Jojoba oil is the base for these essential oils.
