1) Standard (Borax): Safe for the environment and naturally derived. Known as a skin irritant by some, but does not penetrate the skin and is not accumulative in the body. 2) Grain Alcohol 20%: Anything containing at least 15% alcohol is considered self preserving. This eliminates the concern about potentially harmful microorganisms, but some believe alcohol to be drying to the skin. Some research points to isopropyl alcohol as being drying while grain alcohol not so much. 3) Optiphen ND (conventional preservative): A complete preservative system that is paraben free and formaldehyde free.
